Our next media studies project is the music marketing project. We were allowed to pick our partners this time, so I picked the partner I had for the sound project and the film pitch project because we work very efficiently and it is much less stressful than working with other people. Each group was randomly assigned a genre of music to study, and we got bluegrass. We are taking it one step at a time, so for the first week, we did the research phase. We had to research two different artists under two different record labels, making it a total of four bands/artists. There were four members in the group, so naturally, we assigned ourselves one band/artist each. For the two labels, we picked Nonesuch Records and Thirty Tigers, with my band to research being Greensky Bluegrass. The researching guidelines were pretty straightforward, with us needing to fill a chart with the following sections: brief history, target audience/brand identity, digital marketing and distribution, and non-digital marketing and distribution.
The research portion was due after break, and we managed our time pretty efficiently, filling out most of the chart before thanksgiving break even started. This was super nice, because coming back from break I didn't want any type of work, and having only a quarter of an assignment to do takes away from that stress. We all finished and submitted it pretty quickly after break was over.
The next phase of the project is the planning phase. This includes using our research to create an original brand, marketing strategy, and general persona for our artist/band. We created a schedule to follow in order to complete milestones at a steady pace so we don't end up cramming at the last second trying to do a month-long project in one night. We set goals to complete by the end of each day of class, and so far we have pretty much been on track. The storyboard was completed on time, exactly how we planned it on our schedule. After that, the rest of the project is the production and post-production phase, giving us full freedom on how we structure our work to get it done on time. Following the schedule we had already set, we decided to film the whole music video this last weekend so we would have time to edit and work on the PowerPoint in class throughout the rest of the week, giving us time to submit it well before the due date on Monday. Also if we end up realizing we don't have enough footage, it is fine because we have a whole week ahead of us to shoot any extra footage.
That has basically been the rundown on what we have accomplished during the research and planning process for our project. I'd even say we are ahead since we already finished production. It has been a relatively smooth ride so far, and I hope it continues to be for the remainder of the project.
